Our Pastor
Reverend Larry W. Whaley was born and raised in Charleston, SC. He received his education in Charleston County Schools, and he graduated from Charles A. Brown High School. Reverend Whaley graduated from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Political Science. He completed the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University of Saint Louis, Missouri. Reverend Whaley has successfully completed the certification examination as a Senior Human Resource Professional sponsored by Society of Human Resource Professionals.
Reverend Whaley in February 2019, retired as the General Manger and Chief Human Resources Officer of Showa Denko Carbon, Inc. of Ridgeville, SC.
Reverend Whaley has served as the chairman of the Ridgeville Branch of the NAACP’S Freedom Fund Banquet 2000 thru 2009. He is a fully paid Life Member of the NAACP, Ridgeville Branch. Reverend is a member of the Mu Alpha Chapter (Charleston) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. where he currently serves as the Chaplain and has served as the Regional Vice Chairman of the Talent Hunt Committee. Our Pastor is the President of the Charleston Area Chapter and a Platinum Life Member of the Wilberforce University Alumni Association.
Reverend Whaley gave his life to Christ at an early age at Greater Mount Pisgah Baptist Missionary Church under the Pastorate of the Late Reverend J.J. Maxwell. He was ordained as a Deacon at the Second Baptist Church, Columbus, Indiana, under the pastorate of the late Elzie Lawler, Jr. He has served in many capacities of the church including Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, and Chairman of the Deacon and Trustee Ministries.
Reverend Whaley acknowledged and accepted his calling in December 2001. In January 2002, he and his wife delivered their trial sermons under the pastorate of the Reverend Miriam Frances of the Greater Mount Pisgah Baptist Missionary Church, where he served as an Associate Minister. Reverend Whaley is a 2004 graduate from the Morris College Extension of Pastoral Studies at Charleston, SC. He was ordained on February 27, 2009, by the New Ashley Missionary Baptist Association, Reverend Doctor Alfred Williams, Moderator. On the Second Sunday of June 2009, Rev. Whaley was installed as the 14th Pastor of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Whaley served as the former Secretary of New Ashley Missionary Baptist Association and was General Secretary of Charleston County Missionary Baptist Association. He is second to the Reverend S. T. Simmons to hold the Secretary in position in these two Associations. Currently, Rev. Whaley serves as the Vice Moderator of the Charleston County Missionary Baptist Association. In August 2019, Reverend Whaley was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree by the Christian Education Institute and Seminary (CETIS).
Reverend Whaley is the son of the late Deacon James Whaley, Sr. and Deaconess Elizabeth Judge Whaley. He is married to Reverend Jeanette L. Gibbs Whaley, a Retired School Principal, Charleston County Public Schools. They have one son Larry, Jr., and they have three grandchildren, DaVonte Amir, and Semaj Ancrum-Whaley, and Kameron Whaley.
